Joseph divulged that Ethel had enjoyed a wonderful summer and transition into fall, but her health condition unexpectedly changed. “Unfortunately on Thursday morning she suffered a stroke in her sleep. She was brought to an area hospital where she is now receiving treatment,” he said.

Joseph noted that Ethel, known for her strength and fulfilling life, is receiving attentive care while her family supports her during this time. Ethel is close to her kin, including her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces, whom she enjoys spending time with.

According to Joseph, during the summer, “she was able to get out on the water, visit the pier, and enjoy many lunches and dinner with family.” Those moments were a treasured gift, benefiting everyone involved, including Ethel.

Sadly, Ethel has now been hospitalized, but the former US representative has encouraged everyone to keep her in their thoughts and prayers. Joseph has also requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this time.

Ethel, who is passionate about advocating for social issues, turned 96 on April 11, 2024. Joseph showed the world how Ethel enjoyed her special day surrounded by her big family in a heartwarming photo on X. He captioned the post, “Happy 96th to the World’s most amazing Gramma!! 🎂.”

Her daughter, Kerry Kennedy, also celebrated Ethel’s birthday, highlighting some of her greatest achievements. She penned on Instagram, “My mother founded @rfkhumanrights in the fall of 1969 to carry forth my father’s legacy. For more than half a century, my mom has been a champion for justice, standing with human rights defenders around the globe.”

Kerry stated that Ethel’s bravery and commitment to human rights inspire their team daily. Her influence drives the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, a non-profit organization, to ensure government accountability and advocate for human rights education and youth organizing.

Prior to this tragedy, she had already gained public attention for her support of the campaign of John F. Kennedy and later Robert during his successful run for a US Senate seat representing New York.

In the late 1970s, fueled by a renewed dedication to public service, Ethel devoted much of her time and energy to various social causes, particularly the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Project.

Ethel, who gave birth to her and Robert’s 11th child, Rory, six months after his death, also founded the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Centre. The center carries on Robert’s legacy through initiatives like the Human Rights Awards and Journalism Awards.

Additionally, she co-chairs the Coalition of Gun Control and actively participates in various other human rights organizations.

Throughout the years, Ethel has faced significant losses. In 1984, she lost her son David to an accidental drug overdose, and in 1997, her son Michael passed away in a skiing accident.
