Ibelieved I had lost everything when my stepmother Brenda and her daughters evicted me after learning that my father had gone into a coma. They had no idea that karma was going to retaliate in a way that none of us could have foreseen.
I knew things would change when Dad brought Brenda and her daughters into our house. And not in a positive way. He was worried about his health and tried to work out more after meeting Brenda at his monthly yoga class.
He thought she was a good-hearted woman who had experienced a lot. Her charming rhetoric and phony smiles were obvious to me. It began quietly. Brenda would constantly use this sugarcoated tone when she made passive-aggressive remarks regarding my academics or my attire.
Her twin daughters, Brittany and Chloe, were no better. Blue-eyed, blonde, and incredibly cruel. To reveal their actual selves, they would wait until Dad was out of earshot.
“Leah, nice top. Was it discovered in a dumpster? One day, Brittany grinned.

“Yeah, it looks like it was made in the 1990s,” Chloe said, chuckling.
For the most part, I disregarded them. However, I found it difficult to ignore it. They didn’t let up. Brenda always twisted things around when I tried to tell Dad.
“Leah is simply struggling to acclimate, Michael. “You know how they are, teenagers,” Brenda would add, her voice brimming with phony worry.
Dad would only nod while staring at me bewildered and disappointed. “Leah, you need to make a greater effort to be friendly with them. Brenda is making every effort.
I felt like screaming. Rather, I simply nodded and slammed the door behind me as I left for my room. The only place I felt safe was my shelter. There, I tried to escape by reading and listening to music for hours.
Things worsened one night. I heard Brenda in the living room conversing with Dad.
“We need to discuss Leah, Michael. She is… challenging. She frightens the girls. She is constantly furious.
I touched the door with my ear. Are you afraid of me? That was a lot of money.

Dad responded, “Leah’s just… going through a lot,” in a tired tone. “She misses her mom.”
Brenda let out a loud sigh. “I understand, but we can’t avoid her at all costs. The entire family is impacted.
I was no longer able to listen. Into the living room I strode.
“Are you serious? Brenda, you’re lying to him! The issue is not with me, but with you and your girls.”
Dad got to his feet, appearing surprised. “Calm down, Leah. We can discuss this.
“No, we can’t,” I said firmly. “You never listen to me.”
Brenda put on her most worried expression. “Leah, we’re just trying to help you.”
“Help me?” I gave a sour laugh. “You’re ruining everything.”
Grinning like Cheshire cats, the twins emerged at the top of the steps. I had to get away, so I pivoted and dashed out the front door. I tried to cool off by taking a stroll around the neighborhood. Dad was waiting for me on the porch when I returned.

He whispered, “Love, we have to figure out how to make this work.” “I love Brenda just as much as I love you. We are now a family.
Tears filled my eyes as I gazed at him. “They’re terrible to me, Dad. Do you not see that?
He gave me a firm hug. “I swear, I will speak with them. Try to be patient, please.
Though I knew it was futile, I nodded. Brenda had him completely enamored with her, and I was only the inconvenience.
The weeks that followed were a haze of hushed taunts, aloof shoulders, and forced smiles. I tallied the days until I could get away to college and avoid Brenda and her malevolent offspring.
But my heart was nagging at something else. Dad’s condition had been unstable for some time. After he complained of persistent stomach discomfort, the physicians ultimately determined that surgery was necessary.
I was afraid even though it was meant to be trivial. My flesh crawled at the idea of being left alone with Brenda and her daughters.

“What if something were to happen to you, Dad? We were sitting at the kitchen table one evening when I stated, “They’ll throw me out.” Brenda was out terrorizing some mall with the twins.
He gave my hand a squeeze. “You’re worrying too much, Leah. Brenda is concerned about you. That’s not what she would do.
“Dad, you don’t know them like I do,” I repeatedly said. “You’ve got to trust me.”
He looked exhausted as he moaned. “I do trust you, but Brenda… she seems genuine.” I wanted to continue our argument, but I could tell he was worn out. Knowing it wouldn’t make a difference, I dropped it.
I stayed at home and tried to divert my attention as the day of the procedure drew near. Although I knew it wasn’t out of concern, Brenda was with him in the hospital. She desired total control.
Brenda had returned home as soon as Dad went into surgery, and I heard her voice from the kitchen at around noon. She was talking on the phone. I slipped closer, out of sight, curious.

“What do you mean, he’s in a coma?” She spoke in a high-pitched but unsurprised voice. My heart fell to the ground. “Yes, thank you, Doctor,” Brenda concluded, and I heard it.
I snatched up my phone out of suspicion of drama and pressed record as Brenda hung up. Her girls heard her call.
“Come on, girls! Leah is no longer with us. “Michael is unconscious.”
Chloe and Brittany ran in laughing. “Really? Can we now expel her?
A sly smile formed across Brenda’s face as she nodded. “Leah! Gather your belongings. You’ve left.”
I stammered into the kitchen while attempting to speak clearly. “What? You’re not capable of doing this.”
Brenda responded, “Oh, but I can,” with a chilly smile. “Now get out.”
With trembling hands, I hurried upstairs and tossed my things in a bag. It was unbelievable to me that this was taking place. I realized I just had one chance to fight back as I packed. The recording was with me. It might, just might, save me.
I was completely lost when I stayed the night at a friend’s house. I visited Dad at the hospital the following morning. I was shocked to find him sitting up in bed, appearing exhausted but yet very much alive.
“Leah!” he said with a smile as I hurried over to join him.
“Hey Dad! You’re all right.” With tears running down my cheeks, I gave him a tight hug. “Brenda told me you were in a coma.”
“What?” He appeared perplexed. “The procedure proceeded smoothly. A mix-up occurred, but I’m fine. On the patient sheet that hung on the bed, a nurse had written that I was in a coma. I was just dozing off from the anesthesia.
I took my phone out. “You need to hear this.”
His expression went from bewilderment to rage as I played the recording for him. “This is unbelievable. Leah, we’re heading home. This is over. I’ll speak with the physicians and expedite my release.”
The tension was evident as we drove back in quiet. Brenda, Brittany, and Chloe were on the porch, looking shocked as we came up to the house. I was the last person they anticipated to arrive, even though they had heard Dad had been discharged from the hospital.

“Where is Michael? And why are you in this place?” Brenda scoffed. “You’re not welcome.”
“Actually, I am.” “Wait a minute.” I said. With my dad on my arm, I walked around the side of the house and assisted him out of the car after returning to the garage. Their expressions were priceless.
“Michael!” Brenda let out a gasp. “You’re…”
Coldly, “Alive and well,” he said. “Leah, play the recording.”
I did, and as the tape rolled, the arrogant looks vanished. Brittany and Chloe remained motionless next to Brenda, and her face became white.
Dad shouted, “You’ve shown your true colors,” his voice trembling with rage. “The only person with the authority to evict someone from this residence is myself. Having said that, I’m dismissing you. You all. “Now.”
Dad raised a hand when Brenda attempted to dispute. “No more falsehoods. No more tricks. Leave.”
They departed, staring and protesting, but they couldn’t be stopped. We saw the tension eventually subside as they drove off.
Dad held me close within. “Leah, I’m very sorry. I ought to have trusted you.
I said, “It’s okay, Dad,” with a sense of calm that had been lacking for a while. “Now we’re united. That is the only thing that counts.
I knew we were prepared to start again as we bid farewell to our turbulent past. It was just the two of us, together, confronting whatever lay ahead.
