Breaking Down the New Dexter: Original Sin Teaser Trailer – Hidden Details You Might Have Missed!
On Thursday, after months of anticipation, Showtime finally unveiled the first teaser trailer for Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel series set 15 years before the original show’s pilot. The network shared the video early in the morning across all major social media platforms, sparking excitement among fans eager for this new chapter in the Dexter franchise.
Although the teaser was brief, running less than 30 seconds, it introduced several new characters and teased younger versions of familiar faces, including Masuka, Batista, LaGuerta, and others. The trailer was set to the track “Satisfaction Fergalicious Remix” by Lansen Holloway.
One of the most thrilling moments was hearing none other than Michael C. Hall’s voice, delivering fresh lines from the upcoming season:
“I… am a killer. But I wasn’t born this way. I was made. By my history… by the people around me.”
“They say it takes a village to raise a killer.”
Now, let’s dive into a scene-by-scene breakdown of the Dexter: Original Sin teaser trailer!
Frame by frame analysis:
1. The teaser trailer opens with Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, staring directly into the camera as the elevator doors at Miami Metro PD slide open. The inside of the elevator looks slightly different from the original Dexter series.
2. Kill room scene! Dexter is preparing a kill room. Judging by the photos hanging on the plastic sheets, most of the victims (likely the killer lying on Dexter’s table) are male. One photo (second on the top left) looks like a mugshot, indicating that the person had legal troubles.
3. Suddenly, Dexter is interrupted mid-preparation and leaves the kill room in a panic. The location looks like a store.
4. Sarah Michelle Gellar appears as Tanya Martin, on duty.
5. Christian Slater, as Harry Morgan, is leading a late-night investigation at a suspect’s house. He is accompanied by Bobby Watt (Reno Wilson) and Captain Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey).
6. Dexter, still a newcomer at Miami Metro in Original Sin, is photographing a dead body at a crime scene. It’s striking how much Patrick Gibson resembles a young Michael C. Hall here!
7. “A Serial Killer Origin Story” title card.
8. A heated argument between Harry and Dexter unfolds. Harry is visibly angry, while Dexter looks surprised, though the cause of their fight is unclear.
9. Another kill room scene. The lighting makes it nostalgic for Dexter fans, as it recreates the series’ first human victim, Nurse Mary, from episode 103, “Popping Cherry.”
10. Deb (Molly Brown) and her best friend Sofia (Raquel Justice) are seen at high school. Debra is 17 in the prequel.
11. Dexter hides behind a palm tree at night, appearing upset.
12. Aaron Spencer and Tanya Martin share a laugh at work, possibly joking about something. Angel Batista is barely visible in the background.
13. In the next scene, Tanya and Aaron are back at Miami Metro PD, but now they appear serious. A familiar door from the original series can be seen in the background.
14. Dexter is intensely focused on something.
15. It turns out to be an earring. Who does it belong to?
16. “Christian Slater” title card.
17. “Patrick Gibson” title card.
18. Harry Morgan seems unwell or worried. It’s a reminder of the health issues Harry struggled with during this period of Dexter’s life.
19. Patrick Gibson as Dexter at Miami Metro looks visibly worried. Again, the resemblance to young Michael C. Hall is uncanny.
20. “Christina Milian” title card.
21. The teaser gives a first look at Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta. Her likeness to Lauren Luna Vélez’s portrayal is remarkable! Aaron Jennings appears behind her, playing Miami Metro officer Clark Sanders.
22. “Special Guest Star Sarah Michelle Gellar” title card.
23. Sarah Michelle Gellar is seen at Miami Metro PD, credited as a special guest star in Dexter: Original Sin.
24. “With Patrick Dempsey” title card.
25. Another investigation scene, this time led by Aaron Spencer during the day. He is accompanied by two heavily armed men. Also, who puts human skulls in fish tanks?!
26. “And Michael C. Hall as the inner voice of Dexter” title card. Yes, Michael C. Hall will narrate Dexter’s inner monologue, as announced at the Comic-Con panel on July 26th.
27. Dexter is shown beating someone up at a party. Fun fact: from interviews with the cast at SDCC 2024, we know Dexter is defending Deb from someone who wronged her. The scene is set to a song by REO Speedwagon.
28. Deb’s best friend Sofia, along with other partygoers, look shocked and disgusted by Dexter’s actions.
29. A close-up of a hand holding a knife. Could it be Dexter’s?
30. Another kill scene, this time from victim’s POV. Dexter wearing his signature protective shield mask.
31. First look at young Vince Masuka, played by Alex Shimizu! Tanya Martin is seen rocking sunglasses, while Dexter, in the background, appears nervous.
32. Dexter returns to the same kill room from the start of the teaser, but this time his victim is ready for their fate. His disheveled hair suggests he’s had a hard time bringing this one to the table.
33. First look at James Martinez as Angel Batista. This casting is spot-on! In this scene, he seems a bit tipsy at a bar, possibly ready for a fight, just like in the old days.
34. The next shot features Christina Milian’s legs as she steps out of the elevator at Miami Metro.
35. Milian as LaGuerta looks serious, while two officers in the background appear to be mocking her. The blurred background makes it unclear what exactly is happening.
36. Harry staring outside the window at Miami Metro.
37. A close-up of Patrick Gibson staring directly into the camera. Shots like this make us wonder whether they’ll be included in the episodes or if they were created solely for the trailer.
38. As the teaser comes to an end, the official show logo appears, followed by the premiere date: Friday, December 13.
